Our Services

Documentary Services for the Home Archive

Each service is a defined, deliverable piece of work — a typed booklet, a printed catalogue, a folded card. Nothing more is implied; nothing less is delivered.

Handwritten family letters on aged paper

I.

Family Letter Transcription

A specialist service to read and transcribe handwritten family letters that are difficult to decipher — because of age or unfamiliar handwriting — producing typed pages alongside the originals in a printed booklet. Up to forty pages of source material is included. The deliverable is purely documentary; the service does not interpret the meaning of any content. Suitable for households that wish to make older letters readable for the present generation.

  • Up to 40 pages of source material
  • Typed transcript with original side-by-side
  • Delivered as a printed booklet

Estate Photograph Catalogue

A photograph-archive programme: photographs already in the home are organised, dated where possible from family input, scanned at standard archival resolution, and arranged into a printed catalogue of up to two hundred images with a written index. Originals are returned to the family. The project is archival and historical in nature.

  • Up to 200 photographs organised and scanned
  • Printed catalogue with written index
  • All originals returned to the household

III.

Heritage Reference Card

A small printed reference card — A5, folded — that records, in calm language and a clean layout, the basic family tree to two prior generations, along with a short written note on family origin supplied by the household. Two printed copies are produced. The card is purely informational. No genealogical claims are made beyond what the family itself supplies.

  • A5 folded card, clean typeset layout
  • Family tree to two prior generations
  • Two printed copies produced

Why Quill Cypress

What Each Household Receives

A Tangible Deliverable

Every engagement ends with something you can hold — a printed booklet, a bound catalogue, or a folded card. No digital-only outputs.

Attentive Reading

Handwriting that has challenged family members for decades is read carefully, one page at a time, with queries raised before the final transcript is prepared.

Discreet Handling

All materials are treated with care throughout the process and returned to the household upon completion. Nothing is retained beyond the scope of the project.

Defined Scope

Each service has a stated scope — forty pages, two hundred photographs, two copies. Families know from the outset what the project contains.

Archival Standards

Scanning follows standard archival practices. Typography is set for long-term readability. Materials are selected to age without deterioration.

Plain Communication

Progress is communicated in clear, straightforward language. Families are consulted at key stages and kept informed throughout.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Our Work

What materials do you accept for transcription? +
We work with handwritten letters, notes, and short documents — typically on paper, whether loose or bound. Materials may be in any state of age or condition. We review them before accepting the project so that we can give an honest assessment of what is legible.
How long does a project typically take? +
Timelines vary by the volume and condition of the material. A letter transcription of forty pages generally takes three to four weeks from receipt of materials. A photograph catalogue of two hundred images typically runs four to six weeks. The Heritage Reference Card is usually completed within two weeks. We communicate an estimated schedule at the start of each project.
Will my original documents and photographs be safe? +
Yes. Original letters and photographs are handled with care throughout and returned to the household once the project is complete. We do not retain copies of original materials beyond what is needed for the work agreed upon.
Do you offer services in Bahasa Malaysia or other languages? +
Our current transcription work is primarily in English and Romanised Malay. Letters in Jawi script or Chinese characters can be discussed on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature and volume of the material. Please write to us with details and we will let you know what is possible.
How do I begin? +
Simply write to us using the enquiry form below, or call the number shown on this page. Describe what you have and what you are hoping to do with it. We will reply with an outline of how we might proceed, and whether an initial viewing of the materials would be helpful.
What is included in the price? +
Each service price covers the full scope described — reading, preparation, typesetting or scanning, and production of the stated deliverable. Delivery of the finished item and return of originals within the Klang Valley is included. Projects outside Kuala Lumpur may incur a small courier arrangement; we will discuss this before commencing work.
