Reviews from Malaysian Households
Lim Hui Xian
Petaling Jaya, Selangor
"My grandmother left behind a box of letters that no one in the family could read clearly — the handwriting had always looked like a tangle of lines. Quill Cypress produced a clean, bound booklet in about three and a half weeks. Reading it at the table with my mother was something I had not expected to feel so strongly about."

"We had over a hundred and sixty photographs from my parents' generation and earlier, loose in two shoeboxes. The catalogue we received is something my siblings and I have each looked through at length. The index is genuinely useful — I can find specific periods without hunting through the whole book."

"I ordered the Heritage Reference Card as a gift for my father's birthday. He has been asking for years for something that simply records the family names in an organised way. The card is small but well-made, and the two copies allowed us to give one to my uncle as well. Good value for what it is."

"The process was straightforward. I sent them the letters by post with a covering note and they confirmed receipt the same day. They flagged four passages as uncertain and asked for my input before completing the transcript. That kind of care was what I was hoping for."

"We had photographs going back to the 1950s that had never been properly sorted. They worked with us to date several images using clues in the pictures themselves — a building we recognised, a school uniform. I did not expect that level of attention."

"I was initially uncertain whether the Heritage Card service was enough for what my family needed. After the consultation, it turned out it was exactly right — a simple, clean printed record of names and one paragraph of family history. The card itself is nicely done. Proper card stock, not paper."

Three Detailed Accounts
Case Study — Letter Transcription
A Peranakan Family's Correspondence, 1930s–1950s
The Situation
A family in Petaling Jaya held twenty-eight letters exchanged between grandparents during a period of separation in the 1940s. The handwriting was an English-influenced copperplate unfamiliar to the current generation, and several letters had ink damage from water exposure.
How We Proceeded
We worked through the letters one by one, noting water-damaged passages and querying the household about family names and references that might disambiguate uncertain characters. Six passages remained partially uncertain and were noted in the transcript with bracketed alternatives.
The Outcome
A printed booklet of 34 typeset pages, with the original letters photographed and placed alongside their transcripts. Delivered in three weeks. The household noted they had read through the booklet as a family during a single evening.

Estate Photographs from Three Generations
The Situation
A family dealing with an estate in Bangsar brought us a collection of 187 photographs spanning roughly 1952 to 1990. Some were in envelopes, some loose in albums, some with names written on the back in fading ink.
How We Proceeded
We sorted the photographs by approximate decade first, then consulted the family during two short meetings to refine dating and identify faces. The index was drafted and reviewed before printing began. Forty-one photographs were identified as requiring careful handling due to surface cracking.
The Outcome
A 96-page printed catalogue with a four-page written index. Delivered in five weeks. The family divided the estate's belongings more easily once the photographs had a fixed reference point.

A Heritage Card for a Family Reunion
The Situation
A family planning a reunion in Ipoh wanted a simple printed item that newer family members could take home — recording the family name, two generations of ancestors, and a short note on where the family had originated.
How We Proceeded
A brief phone consultation collected the names and the family's own words for the origin note. A draft layout was shared within three days. One correction was made to a name spelling and the card went to print. Only two copies were included in the standard service.
The Outcome
Delivered within twelve days of the first enquiry. The family subsequently ordered a second set for other branches. The reunion organisers noted it had been a small but well-received part of the day.
