Quill Cypress ยท Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur
A Small Studio for Family Papers
We work quietly and carefully with the written and photographic materials that households accumulate over generations โ reading, organising, and producing something lasting.

How Quill Cypress Came to Be
Quill Cypress began with a simple observation: Malaysian families often hold a great deal of written and photographic material from the past several generations, but much of it sits in boxes, unread or barely legible. Some letters have gone soft at the folds. Some photographs have no names on the back. Some families know they want to do something with these materials, but are not sure where to start.
The studio was established at 7 Lorong Maarof in Bangsar to address this in a straightforward way โ by offering a small number of carefully defined services, delivered to a consistent standard, without overreach. We transcribe letters. We catalogue photographs. We set down the basic elements of a family's history in a clean, printed format. We do not interpret, advise, or claim expertise beyond what each service specifies.
Our approach is deliberate: we take on fewer projects so that each one receives adequate time. We communicate clearly about what we can and cannot do. And we return all original materials to the household when the work is finished.
Quill Cypress is run by a small team with backgrounds in typography, archival practice, and printed publications. None of us claim legal, genealogical, or professional advisory standing. What we do well is produce clean, durable printed documents from the materials households bring to us.
The People Here
Who Does the Work
Suria Ramlan
Lead Transcriptionist
Suria reads and transcribes handwritten letters in English and Romanised Malay, working slowly and accurately through aged or unfamiliar scripts.
Tan Nee Weng
Archive & Scanning
Nee Weng handles photograph organisation and scanning, building catalogues that are indexed and easy to read across generations.
Aida Kamaruddin
Typography & Production
Aida handles typesetting and print production โ the booklets, catalogues, and reference cards that each project produces as its final deliverable.
How We Work
Our Working Standards
Attentive Reading
Letters are read in full before transcription begins. Where handwriting is unclear, we note the ambiguity and query the household before finalising the text.
Archival Scanning
Photographs are scanned at a minimum resolution suitable for long-term archival use. Scan files are retained only for the duration of the project.
Material Security
Original documents and photographs are kept in a secure, climate-stable location during the project and returned to the household upon completion.
Durable Print Production
We use acid-free paper and archival-quality binding for all printed deliverables so that the finished item ages without yellowing or deterioration.
Clear Communication
We provide a written project outline before starting, and share progress at key stages. Families are consulted rather than presented with surprises.
Privacy by Default
Family letters and photographs are handled with full discretion. We do not share, copy, or discuss the content of any project beyond what the work requires.
Our Approach
Documentary Work Without Overreach
Estate documentation is a particular kind of work. The materials are often irreplaceable, the households often uncertain about what they want, and the results โ a printed booklet, a bound catalogue โ will be kept for a long time. The work calls for patience rather than speed, and a willingness to say clearly what a service includes and what it does not.
Quill Cypress is suited to households in the Klang Valley who have accumulated older written or photographic materials and want something done with them in a thoughtful way. We work in English and Romanised Malay, and can discuss other languages on a case-by-case basis. Our three current services cover the most common requests we receive: transcription, photograph cataloguing, and a printed heritage reference card.
We do not offer genealogical research, legal document preparation, or professional advisory services of any kind. What we do offer is careful, well-produced documentary output from the materials a household already possesses โ set down in a form that will last and can be shared with the next generation.
