What We Offer

What Distinguishes This Work

The difference between documentary work done well and done carelessly is often invisible to the eye — until you look closely at the result, or discover a problem years later. Here is what we bring.

Six Reasons to Work with Quill Cypress

Defined Scope

Each service has a fixed deliverable and stated limits. No open-ended projects, no scope creep.

Printed Deliverables

You receive something physical — a booklet, a catalogue, a card — not a digital file that may become inaccessible.

Originals Returned

Letters and photographs are returned to the household when the project concludes.

Archival Materials

Acid-free paper and archival binding mean the finished document will not degrade quickly.

Transparent Pricing

Each service has a stated price in Malaysian Ringgit. No hidden charges, no ambiguous extras.

Discreet Handling

Family correspondence and photographs are treated with complete discretion throughout.

Expertise in Difficult Handwriting

Reading nineteenth and early twentieth century handwriting in English or Malay is a specific skill. Letter forms vary considerably by era, region, and individual habit. Quill Cypress has developed a methodical approach to this: reading the full document first to build a sense of the writer's hand, flagging ambiguous characters before finalising the transcript, and consulting family members where the meaning is genuinely unclear.

The result is a transcript that accurately represents what the writer set down, without the guesswork that often mars amateur attempts to decipher family papers.

Archival Scanning Practice

Our photograph scanning follows standard archival practice: consistent resolution, colour calibration, and systematic file management during the project. This is the same approach used by institutional archives, applied at the household scale. The result is a usable digital record alongside the printed catalogue — stored securely for the duration of the project and then removed.

Photographs are handled without chemicals or adhesives. Fragile originals are documented before and after, and any observed damage is noted in writing.

Communication That Does Not Overwhelm

Families who contact us are often dealing with materials for the first time. They may be uncertain what they want, or whether the project is feasible. Our approach is to respond clearly to what is asked, explain what is possible within each service's scope, and set out a schedule before starting. We contact families at key stages — not continuously — and welcome questions at any point.

Pricing That Reflects the Work

Each service is priced to reflect the actual time and materials involved. The Heritage Reference Card (RM 320) is a compact, low-cost entry point. The Family Letter Transcription (RM 1,860) reflects the time required to read and transcribe up to forty pages carefully. The Estate Photograph Catalogue (RM 2,980) covers organising, scanning, indexing, and producing a printed catalogue of up to two hundred images.

These are not negotiated on a case-by-case basis. The price is the price, and the scope is the scope.

A Document That Lasts

The measure of documentary work is whether the result remains useful and intact for years or decades. We use acid-free paper, archival-quality binding, and typesetting that prioritises long-term readability over fashionable design. A booklet produced by Quill Cypress should be as readable in thirty years as it is today.

What Sets Us Apart

Distinctive Features of Our Practice

Dedicated Handwriting Specialists

We work specifically with aged handwriting in English and Romanised Malay. This is not a general typing or data-entry service.

Typesetting, Not Word Processing

Transcripts and catalogues are typeset for readability, not formatted in a word processor. The result is noticeably cleaner and more durable.

No Interpretation or Opinion

We document what is there. We do not interpret the meaning of letters, attribute photographs beyond what the family supplies, or make genealogical claims.

Based in Bangsar

We are a local studio, reachable by phone or in person. Materials can be dropped off or arrangements made for collection within the Klang Valley.
